Important Information

Kota Kinabalu boasts a tropical rainforest climate with consistent temperatures throughout the year. The months from March to September are generally the warmest with temperatures ranging from 27 to 32 degrees Celsius.

Here are some clothing recommendations to help you stay comfortable and enjoy your stay:

  • Lightweight and breathable clothing made of natural fabrics such as cotton or linen are recommended. Avoid synthetic materials as they trap heat and moisture.
  • As the city experiences occasional rainfall, it is recommended to bring a rain jacket or umbrella.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals are a must, as the city has many outdoor attractions and activities.
  • For visits to places of worship, it is recommended to dress modestly and cover your shoulders and legs.
  • Lastly, do not forget to pack swimwear and beachwear if you plan to visit the nearby islands and beaches.

Kota Kinabalu is a melting pot of various cultures. The official language is Malay, which is spoken by the majority of the population. English is also widely spoken and is the main language of business and education.

As almost 50% of Kota Kinabalu’s residents are of Chinese descent, visitors who speak Chinese will not encounter any language problems. Some residents also speak the languages of native Sabahan races. Additionally, a small number of the younger generation speak limited Korean and Japanese.

The official Malaysian Ringgit is widely accepted all over the city of Kota Kinabalu, both locally and internationally.

It is advisable that you change your currency in Kota Kinabalu for better exchange rates. Currencies like the U.S, Singapore, and Australian dollars, and pound sterlings are easiest to change. Considering that you will find plenty of money exchange centers to change your currency to ringgits, you need not worry about the exchanging process. Keep in mind, that there is no fee charged for exchanging currency, however only the exchange rates differ from one agency to another.

Credit cards are widely accepted at all hotels, shopping centres, and tourist places.

Now, international travellers from these countries – Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, China, South Korea & Cambodia (including Alipay+, Weixin Pay, UnionPay International, BC Card and Bakong App users) are also able to shop and pay with their participating mobile banking and eWallet apps by scanning the DuitNow QR code while visiting Malaysia.

However it is best to always carry some amount of cash, as not all local shops and markets accept credit card payments.

Access to internet is not a problem in most parts of Kota Kinabalu. Free wifi access is usually provided in hotels and event site.

Affordable internet plans are also available from major network service provider.
