about Soroptimist International Kota Kinabalu (SIKK)

Soroptimist International Kota Kinabalu (SIKK) is part of a global volunteer movement working to empower women and girls in over 120 countries worldwide.
Here in Kota Kinabalu, SIKK is dedicated to creating real, lasting change in the lives of women and girls. Our mission is to educate, empower, and enable them to reach their full potential, while building stronger, more inclusive communities.
Some of our key initiatives include:
• SPOT (Puberty Awareness Program) – giving young girls the knowledge and confidence to navigate adolescence,
• Literacy programs for rural women – teaching reading, basic math, and financial skills to help them manage their livelihoods,
• 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence – raising awareness and providing support through community talks,
• Water & Sustainable Farming Projects – promoting organic farming, fish farming, and self-sustaining income opportunities.
At SIKK, we believe that when women and girls thrive, communities flourish. Every program we run is designed to open doors, create opportunities, and foster resilience among women and families across Sabah.
Through our events, we have created lasting impacts, increasing awareness and adoption of sustainable wellness tourism and hopefully among global stakeholders beyond 2025.

period poverty
Understanding Period Poverty
Period poverty refers to the lack of access to menstrual products, education, hygiene facilities, and proper sanitation needed to manage menstruation with dignity and safety. It is a global issue affecting millions of girls, women, and people who menstruate, particularly those in low-income communities or marginalised groups.
Key Challenges
1. Affordability – Many individuals cannot afford basic menstrual products like sanitary pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, leading to the use of unsafe alternatives,
2. Access – Limited availability of menstrual supplies, especially in rural or underserved areas,
3. Education & Awareness – Lack of menstrual health education perpetuates stigma and misinformation,
4. Sanitation & Facilities – Inadequate access to clean, private toilets, water, and disposal systems.
Impacts of Period Poverty
• Educational Disruptions – Girls may miss school, widening gender gaps,
• Health Risks – Poor menstrual hygiene leads to infections and reproductive health issues,
• Social Stigma & Inequality – Reinforces gender inequality and economic disparities,
• Mental Well-Being – Stress and anxiety tied to shame and lack of resources.
Solutions & Advocacy
• Policy Initiatives – Free or subsidized menstrual products in schools, workplaces, and public spaces,
• Menstrual Education – Breaking taboos, educating all genders,
• Sustainable Products – Promoting reusable pads and menstrual cups,
• Community Support – Grassroots efforts and CSR projects supporting menstrual equity.
